To remove abuses which had become apparent during the Crimean War; to create a smaller/more professional/more efficient/less expensive army.

Reduced from 25 to 15 years.

The 25 years of total service were split into 6 years active service and 9 years in the reserves.

Military colonies were abolished; better provisioning and medical care established; corporal punishment/flogging abolished.

Modern weaponry introduced; iron - clad steamships built; railways constructed

YES: literacy began to improve in the army, but many illiterate peasant recruits could not/did not benefit.

NO: the well-to-do found substitutes to serve in their place, and the Officer class remained dominated by Nobles.
Did the army become better overall after reform?
YES: Better conditions for soldiers, better transport and weaponry. NO: problems of supply and leadership remained, lost battles after reform etc.
What battles did Russia take part in after reform? How was their performance?
Turkey (1877-78): victory took longer than expected. Vs. the Japanese (1904-05) and Germany (1914-17): defeat.
