Describe the basic procedures of Standard Precautions and state why they are used.
Basic precation is to treat like all persons are infected.
Thorough handwashing, wear gloves and other protective equipment, handle all sharps safely NEVER RECAP; proper disposal and clean up of linens; surface disinfect as needed; maintenance of sterile needles; use mouthpiece for resuscitation
Differentiate between endogenous and exogenous organisms.
ENDOGENOUS which are present "within a person's body" can cause infection. Ex: UTI or respiratory when using a non-sterlized ventilator Exogenous "outside the body" can also cause infection. Ex: Salmonella, E Coli. Gram negative organisms cause most today's nosocomial infection.
Identify at least five factors that predispose clients to nosocomial infections.
trauma (lowers the body's resistance as it tries to rebuild itself), fatigue; poor nutrition or inadequate hydration; stress or emotional shock, invasive therapy, frequent or inappropriate use of antibiotics,
Define medical asepsis.
refers to the practice of reducing the number of microorganisms
Describe three elements of medical asepsis.
reduce the number of microorganismis; to prevent re-infection of the client; prevent or reduce the transmission of germs;
State the single most effective nursing measure in preventing the spread of disease.
hand washing
In the laboratory, demonstrate proper handwashing technique after routine client care, before contact with a severly immuno-compromised client, and after performing an invasive procedure.
Long wash means lathering twice and carefule cleaning of nails. The short wash is for 15 seconds with a 10 second rinse. You wash hands when visible soiled; before and after contact; after contact with any microorganism (blood) before and after procedure; before removing gloves if they are visible soiled.
List the most commonly used personal protective equipment.
gloves
Explain how antimicrobial agents and environmental controls contribute to medical asepsis.
antimicrobial agents limit and eliminate pathogens by supressing and destroying their growth. use of biohazard bags for disposal to reduce contamination
Describe the nurse's role in the disposal of biohazardous waste and in cleaning up biohazardous materials.
It is the nurses' role to use appropriate container and to educate client and family about proper disposal
