What is the context?

-About an affair between lord Byron and lady Francis Webster who was a married woman.


-He lied about the date to conceal the identity of her.


-He was scandalous and very promiscuous. Known as ‘mad,bad and dangerous to know’


-An avid romantic poet:


:embrace of nature and dislike of urban life.

Form

Lyric poetry:emotional poem with no story but a strong emphasis on emotion.


-Consistent alternate rhyme. It is a continuous awful feeling which he cannot get rid of.


-Begins in the rhyme scheme of sonnet but later falls out on ‘thy vows are all broken’.


-A sad poem about losing a loved one.

Structure

-Cyclical structure, it will pain him forever.Repetitive and ongoing sadness. It is sorrowful.


-Anaphora, repetition ´in secret we met,in silence I grieve’, stuck in a repetitive cycle of torment where the memory of his lover gnaws at his mind.


-The use of the past present and the future shows the timeless nature of his love for her which will not disappear, this could emphasise how affected he is.


-Accentual verse where there are 2 stressed syllables.Complex rules which are sometimes deliberately broken.

‘They name thee before me, a knell to mine ear’


‘They know not I knew Thee’

-´knell’ is the sound of a bell at a funeral. The feelings are dead for her.


-When he’s reminded of her it tears him apart, it kills his soul and it spirals him into grief.


- A bell suggests that it rings and pierced his ear.


-in the bible, having sex with someone is referred to as ‘knowing’ them which suggests how people were unaware that they had slept together. Biblical language could suggest how meaningful and sacred the relationship was even though they were committing adultery. He believes that god supports him.


-‘thee’ was used quite informally as opposed to you therefore showing their intimacy and close relationshipwas almost a


-‘thee’ by the early19th century was archaic which could show how the love was timeless and deep, contrasting to his numerous affairs. It was used in church and religious ceremonies therefore could show how sacred and true the relatioship is.

-‘in silence i grieve’ ‘in secret we met’ ‘silence and tears’

-the sentence is rearranged to place accent and emphasis on the silence of the breakup. He cannot talk to anyone and seek comfort as it will cause a scandal.


-To silence a poet is very significant as poets usually express their sorrows and feeings. Silence shows his despair, apathy and hopelessness.


-He is clearly a broken person because he has lost the ability to communicate and express their feelings.


-sibilance used to present his anger at her evil nature for letting him suffer so deeply. A lack of endearment or reciprocation.

‘pale grew thy cheek and cold, colder thy kiss’

-‘cold’ suggests a lack of warmth and comfort. A kiss devoid of emotion or love.


-‘pale’ may show how she is lifeless and he has become dead and meaningless to her.colourless, no joy or excitement.


-This line breaks the accentual verse of 2 stressed syllables which conveys his shock and upset.


-Harsh consonance shows how he is feeling broken and everything is hurting him.


‘Half-broken hearted, to sever for years’

-‘sever’ suggests pain and discomfort. Violent imagery conveys his distressed emotional state. To pull apart or divide. They had no time to part, they were unlawfully ripped apart which is ironic as it is morally wrong for him to be in a relationship with a married woman.


-‘Half’ Connotes that she may have not been too badly affected as he didn’t mean a great deal to her.


-his heart is broken and has no energy or will to beat any longer. Semantic field of gray and death shows how he has no intention to keep living if he doesn’t have her by his side.

‘Shudder’ ‘hear’ ‘colder’

-Sensory imagery was about sensory pleasure, a relationship built on sexual pleasure and intimacy.


-tactile imagery in ‘colder thy kiss’.
