Abstract: Curcuminoids including Curcumin ([1,7, bis-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione]) are being found in rhizome from the common spice, turmeric; or known as Curcuma longa L. Curcuminoids are phenolic compounds which carry the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers have demonstrated these properties can develop medical and pharmacological treatments for diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is presented in this report as investing its chemical and physical properties as well as in medical and pharmacological applications to address the complex and benefits of this spice to the world. Keywords: Alzheimer’s Disease, Anti-inflammation, Anti-oxidant, Curcumin, Curcuminoids,…
synthetic drugs. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are the most common drugs used to treat joint, bone, and muscle inflammation and pain. Nevertheless, NSAIDs may cause gastrointestinal discomfort and even cause stomach ulcers (Sostres, Gargallo et al. 2010). In addition, widely used NSAIDs, such as naproxen, low-dose ibuprofen, and diclofenac in doses available…
Pharmacodynamics: Ibuprofen is a NSAID with anti-inflammatory; analgesic and antipyretics effects are the results of the ability to block the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme system, leading to the inhibition of the synthesis of prostaglandins [6]. COX is the enzyme used for prostaglandin biosynthesis [3]. Both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes are involved with prostaglandin production. The inhibition of these enzymes results in decreased synthesis of prostaglandin thus decreasing pain, fever, and swelling…
Inflammation is an essential part and highly regulated response to injury that promotes healing and provides protection against infection. Inflammation is frequently painful and hot, which can be easily controlled by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In 2012, 98 million NSAIDs were prescribed in the U.S. (“Treating Osteoarthritis and Pain” www.consumerreports.com) NSAIDs are commonly used to treat pain and reduce fever and inflammation by reducing the amount of prostaglandins the body makes.…
ligament disease. Typically these are treated through the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, bur since these can have some adverse effects, it has been encouraged to find a more natural approach to the pain management of this disease. This way, use of NSAIDs can be reduced. According to Hielm-Björkman et al., the idea of utilizing fish oil as a way of aiding pain management from osteoarthritis stemmed from evidence found in a study in the late 80’s where dogs were being treated for…
All the collected above information in this paper would be helpful if given to the patient, so one is able to make choices. The patient will be able to know what the adverse effects are compared to alternative medicine, or traditional (Physical therapy, ice, rest, compression, and anti- inflamotories) treatments. The patient would also be educated in the advantages of getting a cortisone shot to the afflicted area. One would also have a choice for alternative treatments for their joint…
The American Chiropractic Association states that as many as 30 million Americans suffer from lower back pain at some point in their lives. Many of these people live in the Seattle area. Typically, most people with low back pain will make an appointment with their family doctor, which often leads to a prescription of anti-inflammatory drugs. These are known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. These drugs can be helpful short-term, but they also come with a myriad of harmful side…
abdominal pain (Although Paracetamol does not cause constipation, a side effect from other pain relief does. Like Codeine and Co-codamol.) • Analgesics with Anti-inflammatory properties built in – There are quite a few pain reliving medicines with a built in anti-inflammatory property such as; Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Diclofenac, Celecoxib, Mefenamic acid, Etoricoxib, and Indometacin. However, the common ones I come across in my role as a care worker are; Ibuprofen, Naproxen and Diclofenac. So, I…
Keep in consideration that taking these medications for too long or too often may cause ulcers, GI bleeding, or medication- overuse headaches. To treat migraines themselves you can take a variety of different medications prescribed by the doctor, such as Triptans. Triptans make blood vessels constrict and block the pain pathways in the brain. Axert, Amerge, Zomig, Frova and Relpax are examples of triptans. These medications are available in pill, nasal spray, and injection forms. Ergots are…
Because Rheumatoid Arthritis mimics many other diseases, it is very difficult to diagnose in its early stages. This disease can not be diagnosed with no one blood test or physical finding. There is no known cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis but you can have symptom remission with early treatment and strong medication(s) known as DMARDS (Disease-modifying Antirheumatic Drugs). Your doctor will check your joints for swelling, redness, and warmth, as well as check your reflexes and muscle strength…
