Poetry in the past years has become a focus on the craft and skill of what the poet is able to use while writing, which can create very beautiful poetry. However, a very strong form of poetry is the kind that relate to people and look into humanity of people along with their psychological state. A poet that was best at doing this is Galway Kinnell. Galway Kinnell is an exceptional poet that grew up in and lived in Rhode Island. He died in 2014 at the age of eighty seven years young. He had…
Happiness; a feeling often times expressed by people, even if it is not felt. A poem written by Edwin Arlington Robinson titled, “Richard Cory,” was a prime example of this. This poem does an excellent job of telling a story, through only a single scene. It explains the life of a wealthy, admired man that showed signs indicating his feelings of happiness. Most people were able to assume that Richard Cory had everything he ever could have imagined because of his financial status, nevertheless,…
We sat around the cabin in as close to a circle as we could. It smelled musky with a hint of dust—Ancient and thoroughly cleaned. The room was freezing and I grasped my sweater closer to my body. I looked around, checking the scene. Around me were many pale faces with baggy eyes and droopy lids. Ruth Fordman and I were the only people of color in the room. “Oh lord, here we go” I thought to myself. I could feel the heavy weight of my heart beating faster against my chest as I was filled with the…

Knowing that I was going to take this course I was extremely nervous and unexcited. I have always been told that I am not the best writer. Putting my work out there for others to read was very nerve racking. I knew nothing about poetry, non-fiction, and fiction. I knew the definitions, but that was the extent of it. During the lessons throughout the semester I gained knowledge of poets such as Ezra Pound, E.E. Cummins, Frank O’Hara, and many others. During class we discussed different meanings…
Shakespeare’s sonnet 110 describes the importance of true love, from a perspective of a person who lost love. The poem is written with iambic pentameter with regretful, yet repentant tone. Along with the shift of the focus, Shakespeare uses melancholic diction, juxtaposition, and connotation to effectively emphasize the regret of letting go of the true love, although it is too late. In the first quatrain, Shakespeare carefully picks words with negative connotation to create the remorseful tone…
The mere mention of the word death evokes fear, anxiety and restlessness. It preys on the young and old alike, the poor and rich, the strong and weak, the brave and the cowards. Because of its nature that remains to be a mystery, men and women have turned to poetry to vividly describe it, seeking to shed a glimpse of light on this “might foe” Such thoughts are captured in the two poems by John Donne, “Death, Be Not proud” and “The Tyger” by William Blake. For sure death is just a temporal state.…
Reading and writing have impacted my life in numerous ways; in fact, reading books has impacted my life by expanding my vocabulary. My mother would read difficult books to expose me to broad new words to me at a young age. She would also have me study dictionaries, and continuously give me spelling test. When I got a little older I would start to read books on my own. I would read books that opened up my imagination; such as the series, The Magic Tree House. Eventually, I ended up being too…
Commitment to Reflective Practice: In Word their Way it stated that students placed in the Emergent Late group should receive a zero on the spelling inventory. When grouping the student’s I wanted to make sure that each student had a firm grasp of understanding and that there was no holes in the student’s understanding. Spelling is an important tool that student use and as a teacher, I do not want my students to have a weak understanding of phonemes. Frustration can cause a lot of students to…
Emily Dickinson, an American poet, has written hundreds of poems. The total count falls just short of 1,800 (Roberts 735). Obviously, she wrote on many topics. Two of her most frequent topics are love and death. While love and death may be very common themes in many people 's writing, they are ironic themes for Dickinson for several reasons. Dickinson was never married and never had an open relationship in her life, but she did go through many deaths. This makes it ironic that she still wrote…
