Edgar Allan Poe's A Dog Of Flanders

I read A Dog of Flanders, one of the classic fairy tale. In childhood, I thought this tale is just sad story about a boy and his dog. But, now after growing into a man, this tale is not just sad story, but a profound story about a boy's dream and despair. In a small town of Belgium's Flanders region, 15-years-old boy Nello lived. He lost his parents when two years old, so he did milk delivery with his grandfather in poverty. One day, his grandfather picked up an overworked and abandoned dog from owner, named Patrasche and they lived together. Even in his tough environment, Nello had a dream to be a painter, and he wanted to see the holy picture of painter Rubens, but because of its expensive admission fee, he sincerely wished he could see …show more content…
However, Nello's situation was getting worse. He lost his work from the new milk supplier, and he was falsely accused of an arsonist. To add insult to injury, he was expelled in his cabin because he couldn't afford to pay the rents. Even a few days before Christmas, his grandfather passed away, and he got to know that he would get defeated in the contest in the Christmas Eve. With a broken heart, he walked to the snowstorm and discovered the wallet of Ahroah's father Cogez. As usual, Cogez didn't like that Nello hanged out with his daughter because he was poor. However, a kind man, Nello found his wallet and left to Patrasche in Cogez's mill. Nello, who lost everything, went to the cathedral to see his last hope, the picture of Rubens which was specially opened to the public at Christmas. The best partner of Nello, Patrasche also ran out from the mill. Unfortunately, when they arrived there, the Rubens's painting was so dark that they couldn't look the whole painting. However, a beam of moonlight through the clouds suddenly shined the painting and Nello's hope was realized. On the other hand, He was like an angel because he tried to do everyone around him a favor even in the worst circumstances to the end. I admire Nello who lived like an angel in the extremely deplorable conditions. And, eventually by seeing the Ruben's painting, he fulfilled his wish so there was a great tranquility and peace in the last moment of his life. Due to the characteristic of this story, a fairy tale, this dramatic ending might be required, but in my opinion this story's ending should be as in the following. After watching the Rubens's painting, he would get the strong will to live and continue painting, so he would try to search for other job and achieve his dream. If Nello did this way, he could become a famous painter with the help of a prominent painter. And maybe he could realize the love of Ahroah, and live with a righteous dog Patrasche more and more happily. After reading A Dog of Flanders, I thought I will not lose my life and dream even on cold days or in the hell. Somebody thinks A Dog of Flanders is just fairy tale, but I think this is much more worthy of reading again in the early years of your adult
