Picture in your mind Jeremiah the prophet hard at work with dim candlelight, writing the book of Lamentations. God is putting the words He wants Jeremiah to write in his mind. This is called Revelation. When Jeremiah writes it down, or speaks it to others, that is called Inspiration. 2 Timothy 3:16 says that all scripture is breathed out by God or “inspired”. The five theories of Inspiration are Neo-Orthodox, Dictation, Illumination, Limited, and Verbal Plenary. Neo-Orthodox is the belief that the scripture itself is not inspired, but a person may encounter God when reading the scriptures. A strength of this is that the reader can always feel one with God when reading the scriptures, a weakness is that it is not completely true because you cannot encounter God through the scriptures themselves. Dictation is a belief that the whole Bible is God-ordered, that God told every author to write down what he wrote. In some ways this is correct, but it goes overboard. God did have a plan and everything in the Bible is there because He wanted it to be, but some books aren’t God Himself speaking, it is the author retelling a story they encountered. Illumination is a theory that the writers are inspired not the writings and the Holy Spirit allowing humans to grasp the ideas of God. 2 Timothy said God inspired the scriptures, not the people.
