Shakespeare is one of the most popular well-known literature artists in the world. He was a poet, writer, and actor. As time continues to pass, Shakespeare has become more popular than he ever was when he was alive. Shakespeare wrote around 37 plays and throughout those plays, he began his writing career in 1592. Unlike Sophocles who had, Shakespeare saw his creative side and potential to be a successful writer. During this time period, the lifespan was very short as a prime example of this is that Shakespeare died at 56 years old. Oedipus who is the king of Thebes had a situation of his town. There is a deadly plague that is affecting his citizens. Oedipus as King was given the task to find the resolution to this deadly plague and put it at rest. Oedipus then sets off to the beginning of a huge dilemma and finds out from the Oracle of Apollo that the only way to stop the deadly plague is to find the murderer of the old king Laius. Oedipus later discusses with the blind prophet Tiresias about who the murderer can be. With Tiresias resisting to tell him who exactly is the murderer of king Laius, Oedipus becomes frustrated and the end result of Tiresias telling Oedipus in outrage that, “You are the curse, the corruption of the land!” (Sophocles, 401) Throughout the journey of finding out who the murderer was, Oedipus found out more of his rough past as well as that he is the murderer of his father, king Laius. The rough past has been brought up to the future with his current wife being his mother as well as his children being somewhat of his siblings.
