What are the two possible causes of low water button operation?

- cooling system water level low


- Air trapped in the water pump when starting engine

What are the alarm system indications given on each class of locomotive when the engine protector operates?

N Class


- Blue alternator failure light


- Yellow engine protect a light will illuminate on affected loco


- Audible fault alarm will sound on all Locos in multi unit


- Yellow fault light on Driver’s panel will illuminate on all units in multi unit


Y Class


- Audible fault alarm bell will sound on all Locos in multi unit

What are the drivers duties in relation to low water button operation?

Inspect water level in cooling system sight-glass.


If water level is OK:


- Reset low oil shut down and low water buttons and restart the engine


- Ensure fans are all operating (AC electric fans on N class can be restarted by pushing the test switch on the top of each cooling fan thermostat)


- Seek advice from maintenance staff if loco continues to shut down because of low water button operation


If water level is low:


- Inspect engine and water piping for leaks


- Water must be added where possible with the engine running with permission from maintenance staff


- If the engine cannot be restarted water must not be added until the engine has cooled and then with permission from maintenance staff


- If no water is available it may be possible to run the engine in low notches to clear the section to a location where water is available


- If the engine repeatedly shuts down due to low water button operation do not continue to restart and treat as disabled


- List irregularities in logbook and advise maintenance staff


- Submit incident report
