Name different types of shunts found in the circulatory system of fetus
Fetal Shunts
(1) Ductus venosus (2) Foramen ovale (3) Ductus arteriosus |
Ductus venosus
Ductus venosus-
(1)carries highly oxygenated blood (2) drains into the inferior vena cava (3) becomes the ligamentum venosum in postnatal circulation. |
Foramen Ovale
Foramen ovale-
is a HOLE in the interartrial septum (located in between the right and left atria) FUNCTION: (1) allow oxygenated blood to pass from the right atrium to the left atrium DIRECTLY *The foramen ovale becomes the foramen ovalis in postnatal circulation. |
Ductus arteriosus
Ductus arteriosus-
(1) connects the pulmonary trunk with the aorta FOR CIRCULATION TO THE BODY (2) keeps the lungs from overloading since they are not functioning at this point. (3) The blood that passes through the ductus arteriosus is mixed oxygenated and deoxygenated. *The ductus arteriosus becomes the ligamentum arteriosum in postnatal circulation. |
