The nares transition into vestibule...what divides the nares? |
The columella |
The opening of the nasal cavity starts with vibrissae(catches large particles) and transitions to... |
ciliated mucous membranes (trap dust/mucous) |
The nasal cavity is split by the septum and its anterior portion holds the... |
Kiesselbach complex, a blood vessel rich network , common site of nosebleeds |
Lateral walls of the nasal cavity are lined by |
Superior/middle/inferior turbinates which increase surface area to warm/filter inhaled air |
Underneath each turbinate is the meatus where what happens? |
Sinuses drain out of middle meatus Tears drain from nasolacrimal duct via inferior sinus |
The olfactory hair cells line upper part of nasal cavity and transition into... |
cranial nerve one, and terminate in temporal lobe |
What purpose do para-nasal sinuses serve? (Hint: they are lined with ciliated mucous membranes like the nasal cavity) |
1) Lighten weight of skull 2) Secrete mucus that drains into middle meatus 3) Help resonate sounds |
What/where at the 4 para-nasal sinuses? |
Ethmoid: between eye orbits, within ethmoid bone Sphenoid: deep in skull, posterior to ethmoid Frontal: bilateral, above and medial to eye orbits Maxillary: bilateral, just below eye orbits on either side of nose |
Describe anatomy of mouth |
Roof is palate, divided into anterior hard palate and posterior soft palate (note: soft palate has some tastebuds) Tongue is a striated, crosswise muscle so it can change shape/position, connected to floor of mouth by frenulum. Taste buds line the side and the vallate papillae at the back of the tongue. |
Describe the three pairs of salivary glands |
Largest= parotid, triangular shaped, stretches from front of ear to angle of jaw--Stensen duct is its drain, exits just opposite the second molar Sub-Mandibular= walnut size, rests below angle of jaw, whartons duct is its drain, exits at base of frenulum Sub-lingual: almond sized, rests at floor of mouth under tongue, has numerous exit ducts along tongue base |
How many teeth do humans have? Describe their basic anatomy and arrangement in gum line . |
32 total, 16 above and below, teeth are described to have a crown, neck, and root Central incisor-->lateral incisor-->canine-->1st premolar-->2nd premolar-->then 1st, 2nd, and 3rd molars respectively |
The tonsil pillars are the dividing line between oral cavity and the... |
oropharynx. Tonsils contain lymphoid tissue as 1st line defense against micro-organisms |
What is bruxism? |
Teeth grinding, usually occurs in sleep (nervous tension or dental problem etiology) |
Does chronic tobacco use affect teeth |
Yes, significant risk for gum disease/atrophy, dental caries |
Does saliva production decrease with age? |
Yes, however the major cause of xerostomia is the increased use of anticholinergics in later years. |
When inspecting for oral malignancies, where is the most likely place they develop? |
Area under the tongue and behind the teeth...any lesion older than 2 weeks must be investigated |
Dappled, brown patches on buccual mucosa indicate? |
Presence of addisons disease (chronic adrenal insufficiency) |
