What does Functionalism say about the family? And who is the key Functionalist thinker?

Families have there own roles within their family which influences their role in society.

The key Functionalist thinker is George Murdock believed that nuclear families perform 4 functions that are essential to keep society running.

What are the 4 functions that Murdock suggested?

1) sexual = where you have to have children (not too enjoy it)

2) reproducing = children were symbolic and they have to be in a heterosexual family

3) education = he believes that values and beliefs in schools creates a consensus

4) economic = he believes that children are dependant on their parents for a longer time which benefits society as there is less money being used up because children aren't working

What are criticisms of Murdock?

1) Murdock's views are very ethnocentric and reflective on the 1940's

2) family sizes have declined massively

3) they theory is dated and doesn't take into account new moder roles

What did Parson argued about the family structures?

Parsons believe that the social and economic changes of the industrialisation has changed family structures.

What family structure was in place Pre-Industrial Society? (Parson's Functional Fit theory)

In Pre-Industrial Society, there was an extended family and farming communities. Parsons suggests that the extended family was not suitable to meet a capitalist society.

What family structure was in place in the Industrial Society? (Parson's Functional Fit theory)

In Industrial Society the family structure was the nuclear family as they didn’t have as many people dependent on them so they had individuality and had a separation between home and work.

What are the 2 essential functions that Parsons said about the nuclear family?

Parsons suggests that the nuclear family specialised in two essential functions

1) Primary socialisation of children

2) Stabilisation of adult personality = Men were looked after by women as ‘they had a long day at work’

Steel and Kidd (2001) back this up and note that the family does this as some adults would like to ‘let go’ after a long day at work

What do Marxists believe about families? And who is the key thinker of Marxism?

Marxists believe that the bourgeoisie benefits from the nuclear family as it helps capitalism. Engels claimed that monogamous marriage became popular so that the eldest son can get the inheritance and private property - capitalism thrives on this (no historical evidence - no primary sources)

What is the unit of consumption?

The family is vital to capitalism because it manufactured goods and services. Also, consumerism and materialism distract workers from their bad job Marxists argue that children are bought p by pester power as they think that materials make them happy.

What does Zaretsky say about the benefits of capitalism?

Zaretsky 1976 said that nuclear family benefits capitalism at the expense of other members of society. He claims that the family is responsible for suppressing ideas that might challenge capitalism.

Evaluation.

1) Marxists don’t consider the strikes that people do against the jobs2) They realise what’s happening but don’t want to get sacked
