Osmoconformers |
Are marine organism that maintain an internal environment that is osmotic to their external environment.the osmotic pressure of the organism's cells is equal to the osmotic pressure of their surrounding environment |
Disadvantage of osmoconforming |
Cells may not have ideal solute concentrations for body processes. |
Osmoregulation in a freshwater fish |
Osmotic water gain through fills and other surfaces on the body, excretion of large amounts of water in itinerary from the kidneys, uptake of salt ions by gills. |
Osmoregulation in saltwater fish |
Osmotic water loss through hills, etc., excretion of slat ions from hills, excretion of salt ions and small amounts of [urine] from the kidneys. |
Osmoregulators |
Have constant internal solute concentration (homeostasis) |
Disadvantage of osmoregulation |
Uses energy to keep constant concentrations |
Adaptations of Loop of Henle for osmoregulation |
Animals living in the desert will have a longer loop of Henle that reabsorbs most of the water, due to larger surface area, from the filtrate to prevent dehydration in an environment where water is not readily available. Animals who live in very wet environments willhave very short loops of Henle, which means they do not reabsorb a large amount of water due to small surface area of loop. They are exposed to large amount of water anddo not need to retain very much. |
