Albert Bandura

father of Social Learning Theory, did Bobo doll study where a video of adults hitting a Bobo doll in a room of toys was shown to a group of children. When the children entered the room of toys they hit the Bobo doll also and imitated behaviors of adults in the video.

Modelling
the act of imitating others

General Principals of Social Learning
1. People can learn through observations and the outcomes of the behaviors they see (without a change in their own behavior ex: older brother gets in trouble for smoking so you learn to never smoke)
2. Cognition (learning through reasoning and perception) plays a role in learning 3. Social Learning can be a bridge between cognitive thought on learning and behaviorist thought on learning |
Observational Learning Process
1. Person models a behavior
2. The model must be reinforced 3. The observer must either behave or choose not to behave 4. This is either reinforced or punished |
Vicarious Reinforcement
Where model is reinforced for a behavior and then the observer shows an increase in that same behavior (friend buys Uggs that you like so you go buy Uggs too)
Conditions Necessary for Effective Modelling to Occur
1. Attention - must pay attention to the model
2. Retention - must remember that the behavior has happened and the response to it 3. Motor Reproduction - you have to be able to reproduce the behavior 4. Motivation - you must want to do what has been demonstrated |
