Heroes make outstanding impacts on people’s lives. Heroes are rarely recognized because people focus more on negatives in the world rather than the positives. Therefore, heroes are almost always disregarded. Heroes are not known for their for their fame or for how rich they are. What makes them a hero are their good deeds. They may be the person who does what they need to just to get by, or the person who helps people in need. Heroes have traits that can not be acknowledged as easily as in fictitious writing. Heroes are everywhere in our everyday lives and the world of literature, they are also defined by the acts they refrain from doing.

To begin, The Odyssey, an epic written by Homer, is about a captain called Odysseus who put his curiosity before the safety of his 12 loyal men. For example, Odysseus states, “At first my men begged me to take some cheeses and go… But I would not listen, though it would have been best, wishing to see the giant himself, and his hospitality” (Homer 25). This illustrates that Odysseus was willing to risk lives in order to satisfy his curiosity. Odysseus would have been better off if he listened to his crew instead of acting selfishly. A true hero would have listened to his crew and acted selflessly in order to keep others out of danger. Additionally, “Moco Limping” is about a man who has a dog that is not like what he wanted. The narrator states, “And I was a man that wanted a beautiful, noble animal as a pet” (Monreal 13). The narrator was only thinking about the negatives of his dog but never saw the good aspects of his loving dog. He was behaving pessimistically and was caught up in all the things he wanted. The man was unappreciative of what he had, but a hero would have been more than grateful for what they had. Clearly, heroes are not like Odysseus from The Odyssey or the man in “Moco Limping”, heroes are not pessimistic and selfish even when they are going through the roughest of
