These values play into every aspect of my life, most of which is beneficial. My curiosity about life and about how other people experience life really gives me a unique view. By being genuinely curious, I neglect judgment and prejudice in the pursuit of more knowledge of others. This leads me back into my values of openness and acceptance. I believe that in order to be successful in any part of life, one must be curious about something and allow that curiosity to manifest itself into a passion for something. I see this as one of my values because I try to rationalize the behavior of others. Instead of quickly jumping to the defense when someone says something that can be construed as insulting to me, I instead try to see their point of view. I don’t get angry often, I think anger is a very extreme emotion that should be reserved for extreme situations. This stems from my father telling me to choose which battles to fight carefully. So instead of getting angry and starting a profitless battle, I try to empathize with the person and come to a mutual understanding. I believe that it is more beneficial to fully explain and understand each other’s point of view than attempting to convert the person to your view. Diversity is a wonderful thing and swaying people to think in the same way you do will not only be frustrating but also fruitless. Empathy has also been a very useful value in my work. I am a CNA at a rehab center. Being able to show the residents that I attempt to understand their point of view has really seemed to improve their stay and has had an amazing effect on the communication between us. They share a lot more of themselves and how they’re really feeling to me when they sense that I genuinely
