George Santayana

George Santayana, said “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” This statement has great meaning for those who are seeking to live a life of Christ. Knowing our history and what previous generations with through, should motivate us to not fall into the same sinful traps. It is reflecting on the three backgrounds, the Jewish, the Greek, and the Roman that reminds us of the disobedience of the children of God, but it also show us the mercy of God. Galatians 4:3-5 (KJV) says “Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive

Society’s structure relied heavily on religious doctrine that determined gender roles. According to the Bible, the female body was created from a man’s body. Thus, this was interpreted as women being inferior to men because they were created second and from man. Moreover, a woman is also responsible for the first sin in the world; Eve offered the forbidden fruit to Adam in the Bible. Women were supposed to be silent, obedient and submissive.…

While there is controversy about the authorship of Galatians due to the style and context of the book, it is evident that the author is Paul according to most historians. James Boice notes in his commentary, “Paul, as the author, is mentioned by name not only at the beginning (1:1) but also toward the end of the letter in verse (5:2).” The first people who first became known as the Galatians were known as Celts from the barbarian tribal stock, also known as the Gauls. There are difficulties in finding out when Galatians was written, where it was written, and to whom it was exactly written to. There are debates as to whether this letter was sent to the ethnic Galatians who invaded and occupied central Asia Minor (North Galatian theory), or to the racially mixed inhabitants of the Roman province of Galatia (South Galatian theory).…

In majority of human society, the patriarchal society ignored women as a women. Yet again, God gives the women the opportunity to see Jesus’ resurrection first and tell other people. “Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles.” (Luke…

Thomas Malthus and Karl Marx are certainly both men of substantial intellectual ability, and have demonstrated their devotedness to their ideologies through their writings. Both men were arguably among the best political and class thinkers of their time. When placed against each other, as in this debate, they stand as almost complete polar opposites of each other, with largely incompatible beliefs on the plight of the common worker. Thomas Malthus takes a classical-liberal approach to the Industrial Revolution and its attributes, arguing that misery and human nature will keep the abuses of the bourgeois in check. On the other hand, Karl Marx would take a Socialist approach, and believe Capitalism is a wretched system, which the liberal factory…

Past justification provides neither the grounds of exemption from future wrath nor the model for such exemption. Rather, it places the believer in a relationship to God through reconciliation in which salvation may be expected through Christ (di9 autou, ν 9), an idea that receives its more exact expression in ν 10: reconciled through his death (= justified en tç autou haimati), saved by his life (en tç zoç autou).”…

Thomas Robert Malthus, Adam Smith and Karl Marx each address the influence of production and prices on the human population and well-being. Specifically, in relation to food, they had different expectations of the markets and growth in response to the industrial revolution. Malthus focuses on a big picture notion of food versus people, and how the human population will fight through scarcity. Smith concentrates on prosperity and its relation to the human population and productivity. Marx, similar to Smith, argues from a smaller picture and highlights how rural migration will affect populations and that welfare is deemed by those with power.…

A sample of the essay I wrote for History of Economic Thought, comparing the economic theories of Adam Smith and Friedrich Hayek. As society has progressed, economic thought has evolved in response to the ideas presented by scholars like Adam Smith and Friedrich Hayek. Because Smith and Hayek resided in two fundamentally different time periods, the body of economic knowledge available to them differed greatly. While Hayek had centuries of analysis at his disposal, Smith had little prior research with which to expand on in his writings. However, despite this information asymmetry, the theories that Adam Smith presents in The Wealth of Nations overlap significantly with those discussed by Friedrich Hayek in The Use of Knowledge in Society.…

George Santayana, in his essay “Intellectual Ambition,” asserts that humans must work to eliminate bias created by the use of imagination over the use of their senses and understanding in their perceptions of reality; he states that the faculty of understanding is often dulled by that of imagination, which often wastes initially “good” ideas by turning them into unrealistic dreams. Santayana supports his claims by describing the role of the sense of sight in the human mind, then the thought process of understanding as influenced by imagination, making his points through the use of parallelism, imagery, and syntactical methods. His purpose in writing this piece is to motivate his peers to strive for a more objective analysis of human systems…

What is freedom? Although there are many different definitions of freedom the main idea of freedom is to possess the ability to do as one pleases and to think and speak as one would like. The state of nature, according to John Locke, is the state of perfect freedom and equality within the law of nature. The law of nature states that all being equal and independent no one ought to harm another in life, health, liberty, or property. Every man is born into the state of nature and then has the choice to either remain in that state or to join a society.…

Contrast the priesthood of Jesus with that of the priests under the old covenant as shown in Hebrews 8:1–13. The Levitical priests had to offer sacrifices daily and on the Day of Atonement and for their sins. Furthermore they were selected from among men as representatives for them before God. Contrastingly, Jesus is the heavenly High priest who did not have to offer a sacrifice for Himself because He was faultless; but He understood our condition and offered Himself as the sacrifice only once for all of our sins.…
