Dee Rees’s film Pariah has a very easy storyline to follow. A young woman who is suffering because she has to balance two lives, her life with her mother and her true life, breaks, free from the oppressive forces that make her conform to what society says a young woman should be like. The protagonist has to overcome many obstacles within herself, her family, and other outside forces to prevail and proclaim her true identity. Pariah is not like most coming of age stories. It gives an interesting and provocative twist on the traditional coming of age story.…

My personal favorite character is Beatrice Leep because of the emotional strength she portrays despite the lack of an enthusiastic father or a loving mother. The first of my favorite quotes in this novel is, “Sometimes you're going to be faced with situations where the line isn't clear between what's right and what's wrong. Your heart will tell you to do one thing and your brain will tell you to do something different. In the end, all that's left is to look at both sides and go with your best judgment.” (Hiaasen 160)…
