The Eighteenth century was full of great mathematicians, many of whom were disciple of either Newton or Leibniz. The most important mathematicians from the early half of the century came from one family the Bernoulli’s, and particularly two brothers Jacob and Johnathan. The middle of the century was dominated by Leonhard Euler. He made numerous discoveries that would change the landscape of mathematics forever, and today he is considered one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. In the ladder part of the century Joseph-Louis Lagrange made many significant discoveries. It is crazy to think about a family dominating a whole era of mathematics, but the Bernoulli family did. This one family …show more content…
He like the Bernoulli’s was from Basel Switzerland. Due to the dominance of the Bernoulli’s in the area, he done most of his work in Russia and Germany. Euler live a long, but somewhat tragic life. He had thirteen children; however, only five of them survived past childhood. Throughout his career he had multiple complications with his vison, and in 1766 he was ruled completely blind. Though this was a tragic point in his life, it didn’t halter him at all. He used his photographic, and was able to produce at least one mathematical paper a week on average. He is considered one the greatest mathematician of all time because his studies covered almost every aspect from geometry to calculus to trigonometry to algebra to number theory. He is credit for creating or popularizing many of the modern notions in mathematics- examples e, i, f(x), and the Symbol for pie. The math notions e is known as Euler number it is the base of natural logarithm a constant equal to 2.71828…. The math notion i imaginary number and is equal to the square root of -1. The math notion f(x) the function f as applied to the variable. He is known for popularizing the sigh for pie. He is also credited for popularizing trigonometry sin, con, tan, cot, sec, and csc. Which mean sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent secant, and cosecant. Throughout his great career he solve many mathematical
