Gregory Mendel
Father of genetics. Used pea plants to learn about dominant traits and recessive traits.
Chromosome
Strand of hereditary material. 46 in cells in your body, 23 pairs.
Gene
Units of a chromosome. Directions for both psychological and physical characteristics.
DNA
Very complex molecule shaped like a twisted ladder. Can make copies of itself.
Neuron
Cell specialized to receive and transmit info to other cells in the body.
Soma
Part of a neuron containing the nucleus, which includes the chromosome. AKA cell body.
Dendrites
Collect info. and deliver to soma.
axon
carries info away from the soma
myelin
insulation,lipid,fatty, around the axon.
Multiple Sclerosis- condition in which the myelin disintegrates.
synaptic knobs
knob-like structures. store chemicals
synapse
microscopic spaces between neurons. When knobs release chemicals, they cross the synapse.
Psychoneuroimmunology
Studies relationship between mental states an the immune system.
Behavioral medicine
Studies link between behavior and disease.
health psychology
branch of psychology that studies how people stay healthy and how they become ill.
type a personality
into work, very efficient, very time oriented, often competitive.
type b personality
laid back, easygoing, social
Locus of control
introversion or extroversion.
Inhibition
Cell is less likely to communicate.
Dendrited recieve chemicals, deliver to soma, soma gets inhibited, now less likely to communicate.
excitation
Dendrites recieve excitatory chemicals, deliver info to soma, soma/cell becomes excited. If very excited it leads to Action Potential.
The action potential
If cell very excited. electricity generated, travels length of axon causing synaptic knob to release chemicals into synapse.
