Recite & Explain: Hebrews 10.10

p. 32

"By God's will we have been made holy through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

By God's choosing and His judicial declaration we have holiness through Christ.

Explain: Hebrews 12:14

"Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord."

Holiness is what we are to strive after.
(make every effort)

Contrast Hebrews 10.10 with Hebrews 12.14

Hebrews 10.10 is related to Justification.

By God's will we have been made holy by the atoning sacrifice of Jesus.

Hebrews 12.14 is related to Sanctification.

We are responsible to make every effort to be holy (i.e., to become what God has declared us to be).

Does Hebrews 12.14 refer to the holiness we have in Christ?

p. 32

"make every effort ... to be holy".

No. This is a holiness we are to strive after in sanctification; we are to make all efforts toward holiness.

Explain: 1 Thessalonians 4:7

p. 32-33

"For God did not call us to impurity but in holiness".

God's plan includes purifying your day-to-day life. This is the call to live a sanctified life.

1 Corinthians 1.2

To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy...

What does "sanctified in Christ" mean?

p. 33

Sanctified in Christ: to be made holy.

Through Christ we are made holy in our standing before God, and are called to be holy in our daily lives.

What are the two aspects of holiness that complement the life of a saint?

Bonus

1. Justification: through Christ we are declared holy in our standing before God.

2. Sanctification: we are called to be holy (live it out) in our daily lives.

What is the purpose of salvation?

p.33

The whole purpose of salvation is that we be "holy and blameless in His sight" (Ephesians 1:4)

What is the relationship between saving faith and a desire for holiness?

p. 34

The Holy Spirit creates both within us...

1. Saving faith

2. A desire for holiness

He does not create one without the other.

Why should we pursue holiness?

p. 35

The pursuit of holiness is required because when He calls us to salvation, God calls us to fellowship with Himself and His Son (1John 1.3).

Since God is light and in Him is no darkness (1John 1.5), we cannot have fellowship with Him if we continue to walk in darkness.

Does God require a perfect, sinless life to have fellowship with him?

p. 35-36

No, but God does require that we:

1. be serious about holiness

2. grieve over our sin instead of justifying it

3. earnestly pursue holiness as a way of life.

Explain why holiness is required for our own well-being.

p. 36

Hebrews 12.6

“For the Lord disciplines the one He loves and chastises every son he accepts.”

God is serious about holiness in the lives of His children, and He will discipline us to attain it. He disciplines us because we need discipline.

Explain why holiness is necessary for effective service to God.

p. 37

2 Tim 2.21

Those who cleanse themselves from what is dishonorable will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work .

We cannot bring our service to God in an unclean vessel.

Explain why holiness is necessary for assurance of salvation.

p. 37

Romans 8.14

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

The only safe evidence that we are in Christ is a holy life. If we know nothing of holiness, we do not have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.

Every professing Christian should ask these 4 questions regarding holiness in his life:

p. 38

1. Is there practical evidence of holiness?

2. Do I desire & strive after holiness?

3. Do I grieve over my lack of holiness?

4. Do I seek the help of God to be holy?
