How is a relief train obtained to assist a disabled train when the pilot has accompanied the disabled train? Already with it, when it became disabled.

When the disabled train is protected the train controller will dictate a train authority to the signaller at the station where the relief train will depart. Ensure the pilot remains with the disabled train until the relief train arrives.

The relief train driver will sign the butt of the form. The train authority will state which end of the section the disabled train must be taken. The train authority is the authority to enter the section.

The relief driver must:

- proceed according to fixed signals cautiously at reduced speed to the fixed signal held at stop by the disabled train or if no fixed signals proceed cautiously at reduced speed 2 km from the disabled train

- stop and endorse the datalogger VC x 2

- travel max 15 km/h to Driver

- pick up the driver and travel to disabled train max15 km/h

- couple both trains

- obtain the DRA and cancel it

- perform continuity brake test

- instruct pilot to accompany the relief train to the end of the section to which it is to proceed

- contact train controller for permission to depart

The pilot must accompany the train to the end of the section noted on the train authority.

The signaller will collect the canceled DRA and train authority and cancel the train authority after ensuring the train is complete.

How is a relief train obtained to assist a disabled train when the pilot is not with the disabled train? Pilot had dispatched train into section, then it became disabled.

NO TRAIN AUTHORITY IS REQUIRED FOR THIS MOVEMENT…PILOT WITH WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS IS THE AUTHORITY.

If a train has been dispatched by the pilot and becomes disabled the drivers duties are the same as disabled when accompanied by the pilot.

Relief train

The pilot with written instructions is the authority for a relief train to enter the section to assist the disabled train.

If necessary the pilot must be transferred to the other end of the section to accompany the relief driver.

The train controller will dictate the contents of written instructions to the signaller at the location where the relief train will depart.

The written instructions are not a train authority but must be completed by the signaller in duplicate and the driver must sign the copy which is held by the signaller. The other copy is handed to the driver of the relief train.

The pilot must examine the written instructions and accompany the relief train to the disabled train. The train controller must advise which end of the section the the relief train (with disabled train) is to be sent.

What procedure must be followed when a train becomes obstructed during Single Line Working?

The driver of the obstructed train must contact the train controller. The train controller will contact the rail safety manager and receive special instructions.
