What are the properties of life?
1.Cellular Organization, 2.Order, 3.Sensitivity, 4.Growth, Development, and reproduction, 5.Energy Utilization, 6.Evolutionary Adaptaion, 7.Homeostasis
What is the organization hierarchy of life?
Cellular level, Organismal Level, Populational Level.
What are emergent properties?
Properties that appear as you rise in the life hierarchy that cannot be predicted from information about lower levels.
What is the difference between deductive and inductive reasoning?
Deductive applies general rules, inductive creates general rules from given data.
What is a hypothesis? How is it tested?
A proposed explanation for an observation. An experiment.
In science, what does "theory" mean?
A solid explanation for several observations supported by reasoning and evidence.
What is basic research? Applied research?
Basic research aims at expanding knowledge. Applied research aims at using that knowledge in some useful way.
How are conclusions drawn from an experiment further tested before they are published in a scientific journal?
Peer Review.
What is the theory of evolution and who was it proposed by?
The theory that organisms change over time to better suit their environment. It was proposed by Darwin.
What ship did Charles Darwin sail on? What was the name of his book?
The HMS Beagle. On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection [...]
What animals contributed a great deal of evidence for Darwin's theory of evolution?
The Galapagos Finches.
Who's Essay on the Principle of Population also contributed to Darwin's theory?
Thomas Malthus.
What is the driving force behind evolution at a breeder's? In the wild?
Artificial selection. Natural selection.
Who developed the same theory as Darwin at nearly the same time?
Russel Wallace.
What modern evidence has supported Darwin's theory?
The fossil record, the age of the earth, the mechanism of heredity, comparative anatomy, and molecular evidence.
What are homologous and analagous structures?
Homologous structures have the same evolutionary origin, but different current function. Analagous structures have different origins, but similar current functions.
What does the cytochrome c gene have to do with molecular clocks?
It is the gene that evolves at a relatively constant rate that makes molecular clocks possible.
What is a phylogenetic tree?
A chart that shows the evolutionary history of a gene.
What are the four unifying themes of biology?
Cell Theory, Molecular Basis of Inheritance, Evolutionary Change, and Evolutionary Conservation
Who made these flashcards?
Robert Fromm
