What are the principles of training?

M oderation - ensuring that enough time is given for rest.


R eversibility - training must be able to be adapted for illness and injury



S pecificity - training is specific to the needs of the performer e.g. suits the position.


P rogression - training gets harder over time.


O verload - demand on the body increases.


V ariance - the type of training changes.

What is periodisation?

The division of training into a number of blocks, periods or phases. (It ensures that a performer reaches their peak in time for their event).

What is tapering?

Lowering the demand of training to allow the body to recover. This allows for anabolic hormone muscle growth.

What is a macrocycle?

A year long process, it involves training to complete a goal.

What is a mesocycle?

A medium-term goal lasting 4-16 weeks.

What is a microcycle?

A short term goal lasting one week.

What are the benefits of periodisation?
