Sutra 1.1

Atta yoga Anushasanam—yoga is now. Be present. Beginners mind but not naive and without former knowledge

Sutra 1.2

Yoga citta Vritti nirodhah. Yoga is quieting restraint on the mind.

Sutra 1.3

Purusa. Big self. That which is not changing, the eternal, the soul. Something deep within that can recognize the true nature of things. prakti. Purua is that part of us capable of real seeing and perception. It is not subject to change. Conversely, prakti is subject to constant change and embraces all matter, even our mind, thoughts, feelings, and memories. All prakti can be seen and perceived by purua.

Sutra 1.4

Prakrti. Little self. Changing like nature. Impermanent prakti. Purua is that part of us capable of real seeing and perception. It is not subject to change. Conversely, prakti is subject to constant change and embraces all matter, even our mind, thoughts, feelings, and memories. All prakti can be seen and perceived by purua.

5 yamas

Kindness (non violence—Ahimsa),


honesty (truth—Satya),


non stealing (Asteya),


a wise use of energy (Non excess “God’s heartbeat”—Brahmacharya),


generosity or non hoarding (non possessiveness—being able to let go (Aparigraha))

Niyama

Cleanliness(Purity—Saucha)—cleansing to awaken to the energy within us. Cleaning our insides.


Contentment (Santosha)


Patience (Self discipline—tapas)


Self study (Svadhyaya)


Surrender—(Ishvara Pranidhana)

Abhyasa

Practice (in earnest, with enthusiasm and without break). Sutra 1.14 — how to cultivate nirodha (and lessen Vritti)

Vairagya

Nonattachment. One who is free from craving from objects seen or heard about. Hold no expectations. Working towards a shape but whether or not you get into it doesn’t matter. Can bring about fearlessness. Connecting to the all and not the self. Sutra 1.15-16. How to cultivate nirodha together with Abhyasa (practice )and to lessen vrittis

Cessation (Of suffering). Neutrality

Avidya

ignorance. Root of all suffering. think of the circle of suffering. Inability to see clearly. We are beyond our story. a basic ignorance of who we are and of the underlying reality that connects everything in the universe. Vida means wisdom
