Introduction The purpose of this experiment was to test whether or not the heart rate of a daphnia was effected by three different solutions being added: alcohol, lactic acid and, caffeine. We determined that when alcohol was added the heart rate would decrease. When lactic acid was added the heart rate would decrease, as well. When caffeine was added the heart rate would increase. We determined that alcohol would slow the heart rate because it is a depressant. Since humans that drink alcohol suffer from a depressed cardiovascular system and slower brain function, this, in turn, leads to a slower heart rate, because of this we thought that it would also depress the daphnia (Niedziocha 2015). We determined that lactic acid would lower the heart…
In the second part of the experiment, KHT was added to solutions of different potassium ion concentrations. Similar to the first part, the concentration of HC4H4O6- was calculated through titrations of 0.05 M KCl and 0.1 M KCl solutions with known NaOH concentrations. The total concentration of K+ for the solutions with the common ion is equal to the K+ concentrations from the KCl solutions and the K+ concentration from the KHT itself, which is equal to the concentration of HC4H4O6-. A scatter…
different solutions. Since we did not know the concentration of the egg, we had to assume that it equaled the concentration of the membrane. We then had the ability to determine the concentration based off the assumption and the rate of osmosis. We used 5 different sucrose solutions: 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%. One group had an ‘Unknown’ sucrose solution, this would give us the opportunity to use all of our data collected from all the groups to figure out what the sucrose percentage would be.…
In this study, the changes in the rheological curves of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastisols with increasing storage time and the factors affecting the changes were studied,. The results show that with increasing storage time, all the "viscosity–temperature" and "viscosity–time" rheological curves of PVC plastisols exhibit non-normal distribution change trends, i.e., the viscosity first decreases, and then changes from slow increasing to rapid increasing, forming a shoulder peak, reaches to the…
The extraction and retrieval of nickel (II) in simulated wastewater by emulsion liquid membrane technology (ELM). It has been transported of nickel ion (II) and Cadmium (II) from aqueous solution. Which contains a single compound system and A complex system through the emulsion liquid membrane emphasis was placed on it. It was the use of the effect of the concentration of citrate buffer solution and mobile carrier and stripping phase. This parameter represents a very important factor to affect…
4.5.3 Texture Acceptability of Mushroom Soup In term of texture, the acceptance of particle in soups was determined (Table 4.3). Generally, soup prepared from freeze dried powders had higher scores for acceptability of 4.47 ± 1.10 than oven dried and vacuum dried powder that varies between 3.80± 1.06 and 4.47± 1.43. However, there was no significant difference (p> 0.05) among the soups prepared with fresh mushroom and powders in the respect of texture. The lower texture acceptability of oven…
molecules to create equilibrium between a cell and its environment. For example, if the cell is a hypotonic solution and its environment is a hypertonic solution, then water will naturally diffuse to its environment to create equilibrium. The guiding question for this experiment was, “How does alcohol concentration affect the water content in cells?” It is related to osmosis because alcohol molecules are too large to diffuse through a selectively permeable membrane, which means osmosis takes…
across a membrane from the hypotonic compartment (with a lower concentration) into the hypertonic compartment (with a higher concentration). In hypotonic solution, the concertation of a substance is larger within the cell; the cell gains water to dilute this concertation . in hypertonic solution, the concentration of substance is larger in solution than the cell. The cell will…
Identification of a Liquid Objective This experiment was performed out to determine the identity of an unknown liquid sample by investigating its solubility in water, hexane and ethyl alcohol. Also, its density and boiling point were obtained and compared to the theoretical values. Theory Chemical substances can be identified through investigation of their chemical and physical properties and then comparing the experimental values to the standard values. Physical properties do not change the…
As stated originally, our hypothesis for the laboratory experiment was that there is an inverse relationship between the percent abundance of tap water in a mixture and the size (diameter) (cm) of the bubbles produced from the respective mixture. However, our experimental process yielded just the opposite results- a direct relationship between the percent abundance of tap water in a mixture and the size (diameter) (cm) of the bubbles produced from the respective mixture- meaning that when there…
