family, I can honestly say I am blessed for the roots I was born with. My family is from Arcos de Valdevez, Viana do Castelo, Portugal. Arcos de Valdevez is the capital for Rancho and Concertina players. The concertina is a diatonic button accordion that I have been playing for three years in addition to dancing. My family is filled with dancers and musicians and I’m continuing this tradition. Gladly enough I can say my parents don’t force me to dance it is apart of my life. Sadly here in Danbury many young adults have lost this passion. I spent seven months without dancing in a group, but I knew dancing occasionally would not fill the gap in my heart. Luckily I found a new family of dancers in Ossining, New York. “Rancho Cultural Beleza do Minho” is where I can spread my Portuguese culture and also my Minhota roots even with a forty-five minute car ride separating me from it. Overall my Portuguese culture defines my whole life. I’m always dancing, spreading tradition, and Portugal is my second home. All the people I surround myself with were all met through my Portuguese heritage. Whether it be through church, dancing, and playing the concertina. My immigrant parents and culture have structured me in a way that I could never imagine my life without. From a young age I took the responsibility of translating for my parents and striving to make their dreams for me come true.
