    differences were only cultural. The guidelines for how women and men should behave in society were essentially the same. In adolescence boys are encouraged to seek out female attention. They are often congratulated for their conquest, while girls are advised to stay clear of boys. Girls are taught that being a virgin makes you more valuable and attractive. There have been a number of ways that parents have tried to convince their daughters to remain virgins. One of the most elaborate have been the introduction of purity balls. A purity ball is a mock wedding that unites father and daughter, with a pledge that she will remain “pure”, until marriage. Pure in this instance means no sexual contact of any kind! Not even a kiss. Boys too have their own rites of passage, but staying pure is not of major concern. Most ceremonies involving boys are ones that introduce them into manhood. The boy counterpart to the purity ball is called the manhood ceremony. It does have mention of purity but its main focus is on helping the boy feel as if he has become a man. Adolescence was the period when I first began to notice just how differently I was treated, because of my sex. I had blossomed into something new by freshman year and I loved it. Most of my friends and I all had filled out in areas we did not expect. We now had boobs, hips, and thighs. Quite a deadly combination for a highschool girl to possess.
