Welcome to the Land of Ogres It was the moment my world stopped. The moment the birds flew away for safety and little kids playing so noisily outside ran home to their beloved mothers. I can remember it clearly. “James, Yvonne. Your dad is very sick, he can’t cope living here anymore, and his mummy and granny have both died. That is why we’re moving to Scotland.” I could feel the hatred both my brother and I had towards my mum for saying something that was beyond our wildest dreams of…

Samatar creates a two-sided story—one side intended to reach Alibhai’s employer and one side that will never be deciphered by him. The two sides of Samatar’s story represent…

Before I knew it, we were…
CHAPTER NINE The Invasion of the Ugly Ogres We felt our way along like three blind mice through the morning mist until at last we emerged from the fog and found ourselves encircled by harsh wind, gritty dust, and weeds. Which felt like tiny needles against my skin and caused my lips to crack as we wandered in silence. Suddenly the wind petered out and the weeds erupted in high-pitched shrieks. I stopped, drew my sword and the shrieks ceased. "Who's there? Emma shouted as she glanced around in…
